How to Calculate Stamp Duty Payable by Tenants

*Note: Room tenancy agreement has to pay stamp duty and tenants are supposed to pay for the stamp duty.

Tenants are required to stamp the documents within:

  • 14 days for the date of execution if the document was signed in Singapore
  • 30 days of its receipt in Singapore if the document was signed overseas

A penalty of up to four times may be imposed if documents are stamped late or insufficently stamped.

How to calculate stamp duty?

Example:

($700.00 x 12months) / $250.00 = $34.00 (round up to the nearest dollar)
If the lease term is up to 1 year,
Stamp Duty Payable = $34.00 x $1 = $34.00
If the lease term is more than 1 year and up to 3 years,
Stamp Duty Payable = $34.00 x $2 = $68.00
If lease term is more than 3 years or for an indefinite term,
Stamp Duty Payable = $34.00 x $4 = $136.00
